Overview
Modifier RR identifies equipment being rented under the DMEPOS rental program. Most DMEPOS items are billed monthly with RR plus the appropriate rental-month indicator (KH for first month or single purchase, KI for months 2-3, KJ for months 4-15 on capped rentals or months 4+ on parenteral/enteral pumps). The fee schedule pays a monthly rental rate, and after the 13th month (or 36th for parenteral/enteral) ownership typically transfers to the beneficiary.
When to use
- The supplier is renting the equipment to the beneficiary under the DMEPOS rental rules.
- The item appears on the DMEPOS capped-rental list (oxygen, CPAP, hospital beds, etc.) or on the parenteral/enteral pump list.
- Combined with the correct rental-month modifier (KH/KI/KJ) to indicate which billing month this represents.
Common mistakes
- Omitting the rental-month modifier (KH/KI/KJ) — the claim will price incorrectly.
- Continuing to bill RR past month 13 on capped-rental items — ownership has transferred and supplies/repairs are billed separately.
Examples
- E0601-RR-KH — CPAP device, first month of rental.
- E0431-RR-KI — Portable gaseous oxygen, second month rental.
