RT

Right side

Overview

Modifier RT identifies a procedure or item furnished to the right side of the body. The right-side counterpart to LT. RT is most commonly used with anatomically-specific HCPCS codes — orthotics, prosthetics, and certain DME — to designate the affected limb or organ side.

When to use

  • The procedure or item is anatomically right-sided.
  • The HCPCS code does not specify laterality in its description.
  • Required by the payer policy for the specific code.

Common mistakes

  • Using RT for midline procedures.
  • Omitting RT/LT on orthotic codes — denials are common when laterality is not explicit.

Examples

  • L1832-RT — Knee orthosis for the right knee.
