UE
Used durable med equipment
- Applicable to
- hcpcs
Overview
Modifier UE identifies DME purchased in used condition. Medicare pays 75% of the DMEPOS purchase fee schedule for used equipment versus 100% for new (NU). The supplier must document that the equipment was previously used and is being sold to the beneficiary in serviceable condition.
When to use
- The supplier is selling refurbished or previously-rented equipment as a one-time purchase.
- The item is on the DMEPOS purchase fee schedule.
- Documentation shows the equipment's prior-use status and current serviceable condition.
Common mistakes
- Using UE on rental claims — rentals require RR.
- Failing to document the used status, which is required for audit defense.
Examples
- K0001-UE — Standard wheelchair sold used at 75% of the new purchase rate.
