K-codes — Temporary DMERC Codes
142 codes — K-codes: Temporary DME Codes
Temporary DME codes issued by CMS DME Medicare Administrative Contractors for new items pending permanent E-code assignment.
K-codes (K0001-K9999) are temporary HCPCS codes issued by the DME MAC contractors. They cover items — primarily wheelchairs and wheelchair components — that need a code before a permanent E-code can be assigned. Several K-codes have become long-term fixtures (K0001 standard wheelchair, K0005 ultralightweight, K0823 group 2 standard power) despite their 'temporary' designation.
K-code billing follows DMEPOS rules: requires NU/RR/UE modifiers, KX documentation modifier where applicable, and a valid prescription / face-to-face encounter under the supplier's jurisdiction.
